India Condemns Killing of Nationals In Maiduguri

The India High Commission in Nigeria on Thursday condemned the attack on its nationals in Maiduguri and called on the Federal Government to thoroughly investigate the incident.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that two Indians were killed on Wednesday at a Gum Arabic factory by assailants who carted away cash amounting to N90, 000.

One other Indian, who escaped death was severely injured.

A statement signed by the High Commissioner, Mr Mahesh Sachdev gave the names of the deceased as Mr Shanker Saha, and Mr Bokul Mondal both aged 35, while 43 years old Biresh Yadev sustained injuries.

Sachdev said that all three victims still reside in Maiduguri with their families in spite of the security challenges and urged government to bring the perpetrators of the crime to justice.

“The High Commission of India strongly condemns this brutal attack on innocent Indian nationals, Indians have long lived peacefully in Nigeria, they have contributed significantly to Nigeria’s socio-economic development.

“Specifically, the three Indians victims named above were working since 2007 in processing and export of Gum Arabic that gainfully employing up to 100 Nigerian nationals.

“Regardless of their motives, such wanton attacks on innocent Indians do not serve the cause of peace and socio-economic development as well as the friendly ties between peoples of Nigeria and India,’’ Sachdevsaid.

He condoled with families of the deceased and wished Yadev a speedy recovery.
