The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has shut down the administrative headquarters of Gilmor Construction Company located in Maitama district of Abuja in its bid to protect the Nigerian environment from further degradation.
Also sealed off during the early morning operation was the main yard of the construction company along Kubwa express way.
The company was shut down for failing to comply with the provisions of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of its projects since inception.
NESREA Director-General/CEO, Dr Ngeri Benebo, represented by the Deputy Director, Land Resources and Watershed Management of NESREA, Mr. Godwin Atsegwasi, who led the operation, said the law provides that all jobs that impact on? the environment must be covered by an EIA and noted that the agency was bent on enforcing the provisions of EIA Act.?
He said: “We have been to quarries, telecoms and now we are enforcing the EIA Act in the construction sector.”
He further reiterated that NESREA does not need to consult Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) before carrying out its mandate.?
“We are working within the enabling Act which empowers NESREA to enforce all environmental laws in Nigeria,” he said.
