The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has thrown its weight behind the embattled national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh in the ongoing battle for the leadership of the party.
CNPP also endorsed the decision? to appeal the recent ruling of the Enugu High Court which granted an ex parte order?? restraining the national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh from running the party.
In a statement signed by the National Secretary of CNPP, Chief Willy Ezugwu and made available to LEADERSHIP, the umbrella body of political parties in the country commended Umeh for challenging the ex parte order granted by the Enugu High Court.
The CNPP lamented the alleged use of the courts to frustrate the activities of political parties including the APGA and claimed that the opponents of the party, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) had used the court to scuttle the meeting of the National Executive of the party slated for 1, August.
The conference said the appeal would expose the alleged political manipulation behind the order and therefore urged the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Mariam Alooma Mukhtar and the National Judicial Council (NJC) to investigate the ruling.
The CNPP noted that it was a good thing that the APGA chairman was asking for the vacation of the order to allow the party to carry on with its regular activities. It warned that political activities in the country could be headed for an all time low if the judiciary was manipulated to allegedly cripple a political party from functioning, adding that such development does not augur well for the country’s nascent democracy.
