The?Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC)?said that it impounded?50 vehicles during?a special patrol on the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway.?
Mr Fatai Bakare, the Itori Unit Commander in Ogun, told the?News Agency Nigeria (NAN) in Abeokuta on Monday?that the drivers of the vehicles?were arrested for violating different traffic offences.
“Our main aim for conducting?the patrol is to reduce drastically and if possible?phase out accidents and loss of human lives on our roads; we are going to give it our best to achieve our aim.?
“Lives are lost on a daily basis due to avoidable accidents, nonchalant attitudes, carelessness and total disregard for traffic laws and regulations,'' Bakare?said.
He explained that some of the offences included?dangerous driving, light sign and caution signs violations, seat belt violation, among others.
The unit commander?said that one of the arrested motorists would face additional charge for attempting to bribe one of the FRSC?officials with N200.
He?said?that the unit would continue to work assiduously in line with the directives of the agency’s Corps Marshal to reduce accidents on the roads.
Bakare said that the unit would not spare any traffic offenders no matter how well placed they were?in the society.
“We are to protect lives by making roads safer for everyone, anyone who run foul of the laws and regulations shall be made to face the music squarely, no sacred cows at all,''?he said.
He, thereafter, warned motorists to observe all rules and laws while driving.
He also admonished drivers to have proper maintenance check on their vehicles before hitting the roads on a daily basis. (NAN)
