The Police on Thursday arraigned a?23-year-old man, Yakubu Abubakar, before an Abuja Senior Magistrates’ Court for alleged theft.
The accused was alleged to have stolen a Nokia cell phone belonging to one Ibrahim Gambo of Banex junction, Abuja.
The police prosecutor, Mohammed Ahmed, told the court that the case was reported?to the Maitama police station by Gambo on July 31.
Ahmed said that the accused stole the complainant’s Nokia cell phone valued at N3, 000 from his pocket.
He said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
“I want the court to grant me bail because I did not commit the offence that I am being charged with,” he said.
The prosecutor prayed the court not to grant the accused bail because he had criminal record of similar offence before the court.
He said that the accused should be remanded in prison as he might jump bail or commit similar offence when granted bail.
The senior?magistrate, Mr Aliu Shaafa, however, said the accused had a right to bail if he was able to meet the bail conditions.
Shaafa, therefore, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum who must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court.
He adjourned the case to Sept. 3 for further hearing. (NAN)
