Court Issues Bench Warrant For Escapee Defendant

An Ojo Magistrates' Court in Lagos on Friday issued a bench warrant for the arrest of??Idris Isiaka, who escaped during court proceedings into a trial on charge of theft.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Friday Eze, made the application when he discovered that the accused, who was in the custody of Nigeria Prison Service officials, had escaped while waiting for the call of his case.

The Magistrate, Mr M.O. Shomade ordered that the defendant should be arrested and produced in court at the next adjourned date, Aug. 31.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Isiaka is standing trial on a single-count charge of stealing electrical armoured cables valued N500, 000.

NAN reports that the defendant had pleaded not guilty to the alleged offence.

He was admitted to bail in the sum of N200, 000 with one surety in like sum,?but could not meet the conditions and was remanded in prison custody.

At his arraignment, the prosecutor said that the defendant, an apprentice of Mr Uchenna Adigwe?, allegedly removed four large spools of armoured cables from his employer’s warehouse in Ilogbo area of Lagos

He said that the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Code Laws of Lagos State 2011. (NAN)
