The Chairman of the Kaduna State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr Yusuf Idris, on Wednesday urged members of the union to embrace the National Insurance Scheme for journalists.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna, Idris said the scheme was introduce, following risks being encountered by journalists while conducting their constitutional duties.
He said that the scheme was introduced to secure and protect members when attacked, injured or killed while on duty.
“The scheme will safeguard and protect the lives of journalists whenever attacked or involved in an accident while exercising their duties. ’’
He said that only 20 out of the more than 500 practicing journalists in Kaduna State had enrolled in the scheme.
He said that those who enrolled in the scheme and paying an annual premium of N6,750 would be entilted to N1.5 million compensation and that those paying N8,500 would get N3 million while those paying N11,550 premiun would get N5 million.
The chairman called on members to participate in the scheme, adding that the scheme was to enhance quality reportage and investigative journalism. (NAN)
