An Ojokoro Senior Magistrates' court on Thursday in Lagos, sentenced a 23-year-old man, Ojo Agbaje, to 11 years’ imprisonment for rape.
The convict was sentenced on a two-count charge of obtaining money under false pretence and having unlawful carnal knowledge of a lady.
The convict, who resides at Agoka St., Iju-Ishaga, Lagos, was however, given an option of fine of N45, 000 after he pleaded guilty to the charges.
“Due to the fact that the accused is a first offender who has also pleaded guilty to the charges, he is hereby sentenced to 11 years imprisonment with N45,000 option of fine,'' the Magistrate, K.O Ogundare, said.
The prosecutor, Insp. Nurudeen Thomas, had told the court that the convict committed the offence on Aug. 10 at Iju road at about 7 p.m.
“The convict collected N4,500 from the lady claiming he was a prophet and would help her to get a soap and perfume to bath in order to ward-off evil forces working against her.
“On Aug. 12, the accused took the lady to Opa-Aro hotel, Iju, on the pretext of using the soap and perfume on her, but later forcefully and unlawfully had carnal knowledge of her,’’ Thomas said.
He also told the court that the lady was still receiving treatment at the Ifako-Ijaiye General Hospital, where an HIV test would be conducted on her.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 258, 285 and 312 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State. (NAN)
