The Anambra government?has said it would?use Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) to reinvigorate its transport sector.
The state's Commissioner of Transport, Dr Chike Ohamobi, announced the plan in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Thursday.
Ohamobi said that?between 30?and 40 people would be recruited to complement the existing officers.
“You will find out that we have a lot of rickety vehicles plying our roads, especially commercial vehicles, while many of the drivers are not subjected to tests before licences are issued to them.
“So, we want to bring in our vehicle inspectors to help re-invigorate the transport sector so that the people can get the best of road usage.
“We are training the officers to make sure that people pass tests before licences are issued to them. This will ensure competence on the roads and reduce road crashes,” he said.
The commissioner said the ministry would also re-organise the Anambra State Traffic Agency (ASTA) to make it?more efficient in de-congesting traffic.
He said the state government was increasing the number of road projects to be completed before the end of Gov. Peter Obi’s administration in 2014.
“There is no way you can talk of getting vehicles off the roads without having good roads,” he said. (NAN)
