Heartland Football Club of Owerri yesterday emerged winners of the 2012 Federation Cup. It is the oldest trophy in Nigerian football and was the 67th edition. Heartland beat the Benue State team 2-1 in an explosive encounter. Ezekiel Bassey put Lobi ahead in the 5th minute of the first half while Jolly Osarumwense equalized in the 30th minute of the same half.
But it was a heartbreak for the Markurdi based Lobi side when the winning goal came at the stoppage time through Brenda Ogbu.
Team Manager of the Naze Millionaires as Heartland is fondly called, Promise Nwachukwu who praised the bravery of his team said the encounter was worthy of a Federation Cup final as it was not just explosive but filled with suspence.
Meanwhile Prime FC defeated Kano Pillars 3-1 in penalty shootout after a 1-1draw at regulation time. Gambo Mohammed put Kano Pillars up in the 25th minute before Akor Issah got the equalizer in the 40th to emerge third.
