A 100-year-old driver lost control of his car outside a Los Angeles school and injured 11 people, including nine children, the television station NBC Los Angeles reported.
Four of the children were reported to be in critical condition after Wednesday's accident.
It occurred as children were leaving a primary school and buying snacks with their parents at a stall.
The driver, identified as Preston Carter, reportedly backed his sedan out of a supermarket parking lot and lost control, trapping four of the children under the car.
“I was backing out of the parking lot to go home and lost control. The brakes quit, failed, something. I'm sorry,’’ Carter said at the scene.
Carter was not arrested and was seen leaving the scene with his daughter, who called the accident a “wakeup-call’’ and said Carter would not be driving anymore.
Carter's licence was set to expire on Sept. 5. (dpa/NAN)
