Suswam Donates Office Complex To NHRC

Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, yesterday donated a multi-million naira office complex to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to adequately protect the rights of the people and handle the myriads of complaints emanating from all the nooks and crannies of the state.

Performing the official commissioning of the complex, Governor Suswam said that there were rampant cases of human rights violations in the state and country which, he said had prompted the high level of insecurity in the nation.

According to the governor, the presence of the commission in the state was a unique opportunity for members of the public to have access to equity and fairness, adding that it would enhance proper disposition of justice for the benefit of the citizenry.

He stated that there was large extent of marginalization and infringement of rights by some highly-placed individuals against the less-privileged? in the society, adding that the new office was to improve interventions on human rights at the grassroots.

In his speech, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Prof. Bem Angwe who said the institution was established in 1995, noted that it was charged with the responsibility of promoting and enforcing the rights of all Nigerians.

Angwe said that the NHRC was committed to investigating the violation of human rights and that where the offenders were found guilty, they would be accordingly arrested, prosecuted and charged to pay the necessary damages that may be required.
