The senator representing Plateau southern senatorial zone in the National Assembly, Senator Victor Lar has commended President Goodluck Jonathan for directing presidential intervention for the construction of roads and bridges following the flood that wreaked havoc in some communities in his constituency.
According to him, various contractors have been mobilised to site and effort is on to deliver the jobs so that by this time next year virtually all the bridges and roads would have been restored.
He further said he had also written to the telcommunication firms? and various companies to come to their aid towards alleviating the suffering of his people who are rural farmers.
Senator Lar, who spoke with newsmen in Jos yesterday while giving an update of the level of intervention, revealed that he also solicited the help of Club 700, which had started mobilising resources to come to their aid.
According to him, Plateau natives?? in the Diaspora, particularly those from the southern zone, are contributing in the effort to assist his people.
He pointed out that as the senator representing the zone, he had tried to internationalise the tragedy by making the whole world understand that there had been victims of a tragedy of a monumental dimension, in addition to rendering personal contribution to the affected communities to the sum of? over N3 million.
The senator also noted that when disaster of this nature occurs, there are short and long term intervention plans.
“In the short term plan, we want to restore the lines of communication for people to move freely,? while in the long term, you have? to undertake environmental assessment? impact before? any further intervention.
He disclosed that getting Mr. President attention was not entirely his effort, but the the state governor Jonah Jang? and the minister of water resources Mrs Serah Ochekpe contributed efforts to get a favourable hearing from Mr. President.
“By the time the renovation of the roads and bridges are completed we will lead a high-powered delegation to thank Mr. President,” he said.
