There was pandemonium in Meiran area of Lagos yesterday morning when protesters believed to be tricycle operators obstructed traffic over a man allegedly shot by a trigger-happy police corporal, attached to Meiran Police station, Mr Abbey Adekunle.?
The incident which started by 8 pm on Thursday led angry protesters to make a bonfire as they made their way to the police station damaging the gate and vowing to burn down the station.
In an effort to calm situation, the police mobilized eight Rapid Respond Squad (RRS) patrol vehicles to the area.?
Our correspondent gathered that the victim is the Three-wheeler chairman of Meiran- Ilepo named, Dele Oroja who had a heated altercation with the police officer over the latter demand for N50 bribe from the driver conveying Oroja to purchase animal feed.?
It was learnt that three houses to the Meiran Police station a road block was mounted where the officer extorted money from commercial motorists.
The police man was said to have torn? the driver’s cloth when he? refused.? This angered the branch chairman who engaged the policeman in heated argument that led to the policeman shooting Oroja on his right thigh at close range after which he fled the scene.
Oroja died on his way to the hospital.? An eye witness who pleaded anonymity accused the Meiran policeman of mounting illegal road blocks despite the directive of the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar that all road blocks should be dismantled.
