Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ibrahim Lamorde, has lamented that some banks hamper its investigations on fraud by refusing to tender useful details regarding customers being prosecuted for graft by the commission.
Larmode who stated yesterday when he received a delegation of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), led by its president Segun Aina, said that such practice was unethical and unhealthy for the development of the country.
Such unethical practices, he said, include secrecy surrounding private banking, doctoring or non-disclosure of true position of statements of accounts of suspicious account holders, as well as non-compliance with the guidelines of Know-Your-Customer (KYC) regulation.
“If you send a letter to banks to avail you of the details of such accounts, the reply you will get is that such account does not exist. If you insist, then you will be told that such records are not on the front desk and that it is only the managing director or deputy managing director that manages such accounts. This is not a healthy banking development,” he said.
