Two-time World Champion, Nigel Richards of New Zealand and former world champion, Pakorn Nemitrmansuk of Thailand are among? the top players expected to compete at this year’s Godswill Akpabio International Scrabble Classics, coming up in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state from September 27th to 30th. Pakorn Nemitramansuk participated in the 2010 edition and came fourth.
First vice president of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), Sulaiman Gora who disclosed to LEADERSHIP SPORTS, said the duo have confirmed their interest to participate in the $ 15,000.00 prize money international tournament sponsored by Akwa Ibom State governor, Godswill Obot Akpabio.
He said the competition which is scheduled for the Le Meridien Hotel, Uyo, is one of the biggest scrabble events around the world in terms of prize money, games and caliber of players competing in the event.
“Godswill Akpabio championship is one of the biggest scrabble events around the world both in term of prize money, games and quality of players that grace the event annually. Both the current and former world champions will participate in this year’s edition.
They have indicated their interest to come for the championship,” he said.
The annual event which had enhanced the development of the sport in the country will have players competing in four categories – masters, intermediate, open and veterans.
US based Sammy Okosagah won the last edition of the championship taking home $12,000 first prize money.? He won the 24 game masters division with one round to spare, finishing on 17 wins +1394 to beat Saheed Tayo second and Esan Oladokun third position respectively.
He commended Governor Godswill Akpabio for sustaining the championships, which according to him, had helped in developing the sports immensely in Nigeria.
