A? Karu Area Court in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, on? Friday ordered a 50-year-old welder, James Ujah of Gwandara Masaka, to be remanded in prison custody for allegedly raping a 10-year-old girl.
Police prosecutor Inuwa Magida told the court that the incident happened on Aug. 26, when the accused deceived the minor and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.
Magida said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 283 of the Penal Code, but the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor objected to the bail application, saying that the accused should not be granted bail because the matter was still being investigated.
He said that the allegation against the accused was not a bailable offence and that the victim in question was undergoing treatment.
Magida urged the court to use its power under Section 183 of the CPC to remand the accused to enable the police conclude their investigations.
Presiding Judge Albert Maga granted the prayers and ordered the accused to be remanded in prison custody.
He adjourned the case to Oct. 4 for further hearing.?
