The refusal of a commercial bus driver to part with N20 bribe caused him his life as a police patrol team attached to Sapade area on the Lagos Ibadan Expressway shot and killed him instantly.
LEADERSHIP SUNDAY gathered that the patrol team had flagged down the Mazda bus on stop and check operation but the driver refused to stop before the overzealous police officer fired a gun shot at the bus which eventually left the driver dead.?
The commercial bus driver identified as Friday Sunday who was conveying bags of Garri in a Mazda bus marked KSF 432 XZ was shot dead by a police officer identified as Corporal Samson Yusuf over what an eyewitness described as the refusal of Sunday to part with money allegedly requested for by the police.?
But another source told our correspondent that the driver did not only turn down the request to give money to the Police, but also hit the police patrol vehicle before running away.
Angry colleague of the Driver went on rampage thereafter to protest the killing of Sunday thereby putting the town under siege while a patrol team belonging to the police were detailed to curtail the anger of the protesting youths.
Police officers on patrol were brutalised by the angry colleagues of the driver while attempt by the mob to set the police station in Iperu on fire was prevented by a combine team of mobile policemen drafted to the scene of the incident to calm the tension.
Though, as at time of filing this report, peace was returning to the troubled zone while activities were picking up but burn fires were noticed in several areas of the town to protest the alleged killing of the driver.
During a condolence visit to Drivers at Iperu Motor Park and the home of the deceased, Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikemefuna Okoye expressed deep regret about the incident assuring that the police officer will be made to carry his cross.
The Commissioner noted that no officer of the command was in support with the act committed by Corporal Yusuf adding that police are meant to protect the people of the state.
“I want to assure you that we are not happy about the incident as policemen are meant to protect lives and property of the people. We are not happy with what he has done and justice will take his course on the matter,” he said.
He appealed to the driver to continue to maintain peace in the area as no progress can be recorded in an atmosphere of disunity stressing that they should continue to cooperate with the police as partners in progress.
