As the Oyo State command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) commences aggressive public enlightenment programme to ensure safety of lives on the roads in the ember months, it has been revealed that not less than 49 people including pregnant women were killed in different accidents during the third quarter of this year in the state.
The state Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr.Godwin Ogaga Oghene disclosed this to LEADERSHIP in Ibadan yesterday during an exclusive chat in the state capital.
Mr.Ogaga Oghene explained that there has been a drastic reduction in the accidents recorded in the Command when compared with the second quarter as a result of aggressive public enlightenment campaigns embarked upon by the state Command of the Commission. He hinted that campaigns have been taken to churches and mosques in the towns where the congregation was given lectures as if they were listening to religious sermons.
The Commander said that it was gladdening to observe that responses have been very encouraging adding that people were now appreciating the needs to obey road safety laws with attendant reduction in carnages on the roads.
He said that in order to prevent loss of lives through accidents by motorcyclists, 500 crash helmets were recently distributed free of charge to commercial motorcyclists in the state through their union.
The Commander appealed to them to obey traffic rules? in order to ensure safety of their lives and that of their passengers.
