Second Republic President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, has called for? prayers for peace in the country between Moslems and Christians.
Shagari? made the call yesterday when he received Sheikh Kabiru Gomber, who paid him a courtesy visit at his resident in Shagari? to welcome him back from? Germany where the former president had gone for medical treatment.
He said to ensure peace and stability? in the country, the two religions must embrace the spirit of unity, observing that Islamic scholars have vital roles to play in ensuring that peace is sustained in the country. The former President also charged Muslims to observe all the necessary duties and obligations of their religion, particularly prayers for the growth of the society. “I observe that you still have a key role to play in uniting this country”, he added. He said the Islamic scholars and preachers should? caution their followers from taking laws into their hands.
Earlier, in his remarks,? Sheikh Kabiru Gomber had said he was in the area to preach? to the people of Gam-Gam Village. The cleric also prayed for the former President.
