UN, Ivorian Govt Decry Fresh Attacks

Fresh attacks targeted on? military bases in Cote d'Ivoire were recorded on Thursday night and Friday morning leaving six persons dead and many injured.?

Ivorian Minister of Defence Paul Koffi-Koffi, said the attacks were recorded on a military base in Port-Bouey, South of Abidjan on Thursday night, and the Ivorian-Ghanaian border on Friday morning.

At Port-Bouey, the minister told newsmen that the attackers arrived in a red taxi and opened fire on the military base.

He said that the attackers moved in and removed weapons while the guards, who were overpowered, escaped through a back door.

Koffi-Koffi said that one of the assailants was injured in a shootout, while a civilian was killed.

On the Ivorian-Ghanaian border, the minister said that five of the assailants were killed, while one soldier was injured.

He said that the assailants came from Ghana to attack the soldiers at the border.

Koffi-Koffi, who read a statement by President Alassane Ouattara on state television later, also said that the government had decided to strengthen ties with Ghana in order to curb attacks.

The UN Country Representative, Berth Koenders said that the attack was a setback to the peace and reconciliation process in the country.

“The UN has a primary role of protecting citizens and democracy in Cote d'Ivoire.''

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that security had been beefed up in the country.
