Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, a member of the National Assembly, on Wednesday said she had set aside N1.3 million for the welfare of 1,300 elderly persons in the Lagos Central Senatorial district.
The lawmaker disclosed this in Lagos at the 4th edition of the Lagos Central Senatorial District Town Hall Meeting.
According to her, the gesture is coming under the Elderly Citizens Assistance Scheme (ECAS).
She said that the welfare package would be given as gifts during the Christmas party to be hosted by her for elders in the senatorial district.
“The welfare package would be given out in December during the end of the year party for elders alone.
“N10, 000 would be given to 1,300 elders in the community to cater for their welfare, “ Tinubu said.
She said that the Federal Government had not provided budgetary allocations to senators to execute projects in the community.
Tinubu, however, said that she had dedicated her salary and allowances towards uplifting the down-trodden in the society.
“Humanitarian issues concerning our deserving elderly ones should not be sabotaged on the basis of politics because we are all going to be old and grey someday, “ she said.
Tinubu called on members of the senatorial district to keep in mind the need for collective responsibility in order to move the district forward.
“Everyone has the capacity to touch each other’s life and contribute to the progress of our society.
“Politics is not an end, but a means to an end. It is not a product, but a process. It is the art of government. Like other values, it has its counterfeit, “she said.
Tinubu urged members of the community to be more committed and contribute to the progress of the community, the state and the nation at large.
“Through collective responsibility, we can beat the odds of underdevelopment, ‘’she said.
