The lawmaker representing Buruku? federal constituency of Benue State, Hon. Orker Jev has said that lawyers, as a defenders of the rule of law, have a major stake in ensuring that democracy not only survives but? serves as a means to good governance and accountability in the country.
Jev made this comment while delivering an alumni lecture entitled, ‘The Role of Lawyers in a Fast Changing World’ organized by the advancement office of the University of Jos.? He said the bar has the role of promoting democracy in Nigeria through the rule of law.
According to him, “this is more so because the last hope of the? common man in this country is the court of the land, which is? the temple of justice,” adding that they are? the main ministers in the temple of justice while rule of law is not an end itself but a means to an end.
“Result of rule of law is nothing but justice. Rule of law therefore thrives when ministers in the temple of justice contribute their quotas,”
He pointed out that the rule of law cannot be utilized to achieve peace without the operation of democracy, describing it as the haven of the rule of law.
