Niger State Governor, Dr Muazu Babangida Aliyu has advocated the removal of the ‘indigene and non indigene’ provisions in view of the proposed amendment of the country’s Constitution to enhance unity and integration.
Aliyu said yesterday while receiving Yoruba communities in Northern Nigeria, that the indigene and non indigene dichotomy has caused the country more problem than achieving its desired objective.
The governor averred that everybody should be free to live and work in any part of the country notwithstanding from what part of the country that person comes from.
He said:? “ Nigeria is meant for Nigerians, it is unfortunate that some foreigners are recognised more than the original Nigerians just because of the language they speak and the religion they believe in, we must forget the settler syndrome if Nigeria is to move forward.”
According to him,? people use the non indigene policy to exploit the poor which he said necessitated his directive to all local government chairmen in the state to give indigene status to anyone that has stayed 6 years in any local government area and that such people should not be discriminated against.
