The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has trained 800 unemployed youths in Kano in nine different? skills.
Malam Abubakar Mohammed, the NDE Director General, said in Kano on Friday during the graduation of the trainees that the programme was conducted in collaboration with a Kano-based organisation, Inda/Kurma Development Association, .
He said the skills included beads stringing, interior decoration, satellite TV installation, interlocks, GSM handsets repairs, poultry production, fish farming, fashion design and bag making.
“In the last five years, the directorate has vigorously pursued the concept of collaboration with all willing stakeholders in the fight against mass unemployment in the country.
“This initiative is informed by our strong believe that government alone cannot successfully win the war against unemployment,’’ he said.
Represented by Mr Umar Kadira, the? Director, Rural Employment department, Abubakar said the NDE would continue to collaborate with interested stakeholder to provide marketable skills for unskilled and unemployed persons in the country.
“Reports reaching me indicated that between June 2011 and now, the rate of crime and other anti-social behaviours within Indabawa/Kurmawa and its environs have reduced considerably, ’’ he said.
The trainees were drawn from Indabawa and Kurmawa areas of Kano metropolis.
He said the trainees were also exposed to basic business training to enable them manage the new businesses they would set up with their new skills.
In his remark, the NDE state Coordinator, Alhaji Umar Yar’adua, urged the youths to make the best use of the training they acquired to enable them become self reliant.
Also speaking, Alhaji Aminu Dikko, the Chairman of the association, said the organisation was established in 2003 to promote women and youth empowerment.
He urged wealthy individuals to complement government’s efforts by sponsoring similar training programmes in the state.
