Mrs Aregbesola Makes Case For Hand Washing

Alhaja Sherifat Aregbesola, the wife of Osun Governor,? on Monday advised residents? to wash their hands before eating in order to prevent dreadful diseases.

She gave the advice at a rally to mark the World Hand Washing Day in Osogbo.

The wife of the governor said that the habit of not washing hands before eating might cause life threatening diseases like diarrhoea and typhoid, especially among the children.

Aregbesola called on? stakeholders in the health sector to place premium on the day-to-day healthy living.

She also advised? residents to attach importance to public health by complying strictly with the rules and regulations of environmental sanitation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state observes the environmental sanitation every Thursday and two Saturdays in a month between 7.00 a.m. and 10.00 a.m.

NAN also reports that the ongoing dredging of rivers in the state since 2010 when Gov. Rauf Aregbesola assumed office had kept flooding at bay in different parts of the state.

The rally was attended by stakeholders in the health sector including Prof. Olubukola Oyawoye, the? state’s? Commissioner for Health,? and other top government functionaries.

NAN reports that the Global Hand washing Day was originally created for children and schools, but could? be celebrated by anyone promoting hand washing with soap.

Each year, more than? 200 million people are involved in the celebration? in over 100 countries around the world.

Global hand washing is endorsed by a wide array of governments, international institutions, civil society organisations, NGOs, private companies and individuals.

Hand washing with soap is the most effective and inexpensive way to prevent diarrhoea and acute respiratory infections? which claim? millions of children in developing countries every year.
