Kanu Praises Jonathan For Support To Sports Retreat

A former Super Eagles Captain, Nwankwo Kanu, on Wednesday in Abuja praised President Goodluck Jonathan for the huge support he gave to the Presidential Retreat on the Sports Sector.

Kanu told newsmen that the president’s support and personal interest in the event held on Monday at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Abuja was instructive.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Jonathan spent most of the day at the retreat alongside Vice-President Namadi Sambo, some governors and many ministers.

“I must say I am ultimately impressed by the President Jonathan’s personal interest in Nigerian sports so far.

“He has shown several times that he is a lover of the youth and also a lover of sports.

“Anyone who is a lover of sports is a lover of the youth. And football is the king of sports,’’ he said.

The former Arsenal FC player said he was happy that Jonathan was supportive of the idea of holding the retreat.

“He committed his time and energy to see to its success. This is no mean feat. I believe the whole country should appreciate him for this,’’ Kanu stated.

The former captain who captained the national men’s under-23 team to win the Atlanta Olympic Games football gold medal in 1996, said the one-day retreat was useful.

“The retreat was a very useful one. Most of the speakers contributed meaningfully and positively to enrich a probable roadmap for the sustainable development of our sports,’’ he said.
