An Abuja-based Danish company, Gurundfos, yesterday donated relief materials worth over N10 million to flood victims across the country to ameliorate their plight in the Internally Displayed Persons’ (IDP) camps.
The company through its partner, Eauxwell Nig. Limited handed over the materials to the Minister of Water Resources, Mrs Sarah Ochekpe, through the executive director, Engr Edwin Ewegbara. The materials include 10 sets of solar power pumps with two modules each, distillation accessories, inverters powered by four modules each, batteries, recharge controllers, and energy-saving- bulbs.
While handing over the materials, Ewegbara said they were concerned about the precarious situation victims of the flood find themselves, and the company deemed it necessary to donate the materials for comfort, and also prevent possible outbreak of water-borne diseases in the camps of internally displaced persons’ across the country as a result of the floods.
He said, “we are aware that most of these camps are there without water, even when the water is available it is not fit for drinking. In that regard, we decided that we need to cooperate with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources to ensure that within the next seven days each of the camps is provided with potable water however little it is. Based on that I got in touch with Gurundfos, Denmark to make a presentation.”
In receiving and responding to the gesture, the minister, Mrs Ochekpe, expressed gratitude and appreciation for the materials donated, “We appreciate Gurundfos for this show of love, concern and interest for the internally displaced persons.
?It is said that a friend in need is a friend indeed, and those items that has been presented to us to help in facilitating the provision of portable water supply, especially in the IDP camps, we are grateful.
We want to assure you that this equipment will be deployed, immediately they will be put into use, and we will from next week install the boreholes in the different camps, and the solar panels mounted to facilitate the water supply, and the ones for the camps so are properly lit. So we want to thank you.”
She implored the media to intensify public education on how flood victims will keep the camps clean, and be in good sanitary conditions to avoid and prevent possible outbreak of diseases in the camps.
