The National Union of Electricity Workers (NUEE) on Thursday gave Gov. Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State 48 hours within which to apologise over his alleged flogging of one of its members.
Wamakko, allegedly flogged the manager of Wamakko PHCN Sub station, Engr Moses Osigwe on Oct. 24, 2012.
The Secretary General of the union, Engr Joe Ajitro, said in Kaduna on Thursday that the union would plunge the state into total darkness if the ultimatum was ignored.
Ajitro, who led other executive members of the union to a meeting with the Managing Director, Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, Alhaji Idris Mohammed, said the union would not allow anyone to threaten the lives of its members.
The distribution company overseas PHCN activities in Sokoto state.
“If the apology is not done in 48 hours, the union is ready to put Sokoto state into total blackout.''
The managing director, however, assured the union that the company was investigating the matter.
Mohammed said the company had set up a committee on the issue and urged the workers to give it two weeks to come up with a report.
Reacting to the ultimatum, Senior Special Assistant, Media, to Wamakko, Alhaji Sani Umar, dismissed the worker's? demand as mere blackmail.
He challenged the union to provide evidence on the said assault, adding that the governor would not stoop so low as to assault a public servant.
According to him, the said officer was only summoned to a meeting to explain the whereabout of N17 million given to him to repair damaged transformers in the sub station.
Umar said the government was still awaiting the response of the electricity company on the issue.
