Gunmen suspected to be members of a dreaded cult group in Bayelsa State yesterday shot dead two policemen at Agbura community near Azikoro village in Yenagoa Local Government Area of the state.
The two police officers killed by the gunmen are said to be of the ranks of? corporal and inspector respectively.
The armed men stormed the scene of incident with a black jeep at about 11pm and laid ambush? for the policemen, killing two while the police driver escaped with multiple bullet wounds.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the deceased police officers were killed while on routine patrol, just as the gunmen escaped arrest after executing their mission. The corpses of the inspector and the corporal have been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Yenagoa, while the? driver is receiving medical treatment in a clinic in the state capital.
Although no concrete reasons have been established on why the officers were killed, the residents of Agbura communities have been thrown into panic following the killing of the policemen in their domain.
Contacted on the development, the Police Public Relations Officer(PPRO), Bayelsa Police Command, Mr. Fidelis Odunna, who confirmed the killing of the officer said the killers escaped arrest but assured that the command is investigating the incident.
The police spokesman declined making the identities of the deceased officers public, assuring that the command is on top of the situation.
