Although the conditions in the camps for flood victims are still deplorable, some state governments have received their share of the Federal Government’s intervention funds. Some of the victims are also returning to their homes, which they abandoned in the heat of the disaster, to start life afresh as the water level in their communities recedes.
At the last count, Delta State had received N550 million while Niger State got N400 million to provide succour for the victims.
Governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu of Niger State had, during the Sallah celebration, hinted that the state had received N400 million from the Federal Government and raised another N150 million to bring the total to N550 million for the victims.
In Kebbi State, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has kicked off the distribution of relief and building materials to the victims.
At the Ice Camp in Asaba, Delta State, some victims told LEADERSHIP SUNDAY that the conditions in the camp were still deplorable.? They particularly decried the poor security network and accused the state government of being insensitive to the plight.
“We are not enjoying anything in the camp, we want to go home because government officials are using us to make money for themselves,” one of the victims, said.
The Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr. Tony Nwaka, confirmed that the state government had received N550 million from the Federal Government.
