50th Anniversary: ABU Honours Danjuma, IBB, Others

The vice-chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Professor Abdullahi Mustapha, has announced that three prominent Nigerians and the Emir of Kuwait would be awarded honorary doctorate degrees by the university during its 50th anniversary celebrations slated for November 24, 2012.

A press statement signed by the vice-chancellor’s spokesman, Mallam Waziri Isa Gwantu, said that the beneficiaries of the award would include Nigeria’s former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, and General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, GCFR.

Others are a frontline leader of Lagos State Market Women Association and mother of the former governor of Lagos State and leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji Tinubu.

The would-be beneficiary of the university’s honorary doctorate degree is the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, who is expected to be in Nigeria for the event.

According to the statement, names of the beneficiaries of the honorary doctorate degrees were arrived at yesterday during a hot debate by members of the university’s Senate which is expected to be ratified by the university’s Council presided over by its acting chairman, Arc Mohammed Dewu.

The vice-chancellor who presided over the Senate meeting said contributions of the four would-be awardees to humanity and nation-building were thoroughly assessed and debated objectively before their nominations were accepted by majority of the Senate members.

Professor Mustapha, who commended members of the University Senate for their academic and thorough debate on the nomination of the candidates, however, hoped that the University Council would key into the Senate’s nomination.
