The police in Calabar have recorded a major breakthrough in their war against crime with the arrest of a robbery gang. The robbery gang, which poses as commercial drivers, specialises in dispossessing unsuspecting passengers of their belongings. Luck, however, ran out on them when they tried to rob one Mr. Umo Duke who boarded a taxi along Mary Slessor Road.
The robbers, who operated in a blue Volkswagen Vento car, with registration number, JI 502PHC, were about to escape with their loot when they were apprehended by a police patrol team. Three members of the gang were arrested while one of the suspects reportedly escaped.
The state police public relations officer, DSP John Umoh, who confirmed the arrest, said the suspects diverted their victim to the Zoo Garden area where they robbed him. Mr. Umoh disclosed that the suspects were apprehended at the scene of the crime by a police patrol team when the victim raised the alarm, which also attracted passersby.
The three arrested suspects, according to the state police spokesman are Uche Okafor, Godwin Obiozor and Ebere Offia. He said the state police command would not relent in its efforts at eradicating crime in Cross River, and advised residents of Calabar to assist the police by providing useful information that would aid the force to effectively tackle criminals in the state.
