Sambo Wants Centralised Database For Nigeria

Vice President Namadi Sambo on Thursday in Abuja directed sub-committees of the Presidential Committee on Centralised Demographic Database to develop a central demographic database for the country.

Sambo gave the directive after receiving progress reports presented by members of the sub-committees at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He further directed the sub-committees to evolve a framework that would address the situation where “every government ministry or agency will come up with its own separate database.’’

He said that the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), an agency conferred with the responsibility of managing issues concerning the identity of citizens and providing a robust national data base for the country.

He said that such a database would be useful for purposes of facilitating economic development and national planning in the country.

“Challenges such as security also make it imperative for us to evolve this national database.”’

Sambo stressed the need for other Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) with similar data collection and management responsibility to collaborate under the leadership of NIMC.

The vice president said that the country could benefit from one comprehensive data base that other agencies could access, rather than duplication of efforts among agencies with similar functions.

The reports from the sub-committees were presented at the meeting by the Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson.
