FCT contingent for the 18th National Sports Festival tagged ‘Eko 2012 Games’ which kickoff tomorrow in Lagos, will depart Abuja yesterday with 148 and 65 officials for Lagos ahead of tomorrow’s opening ceremony at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos. FCT will feature athletes in 19 sports at the championship.
In her farewell massage to the team, FCT minister of state, Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide represented by the secretary of Health and Human secretariat, Dr Demola Onakonaiyya, urged the contingent to exemplify unity and oneness Abuja stands for while striving for excellence. “As ambassadors to fly the flag of the territory, you should spread the gospel of equality, unity and oneness that Abuja stands for. I have no doubt in my mind that you will be one of the best-behaved contingents to the 18th National Sports Festival. I am also convinced that you will strive for excellence in your various sports and make us proud as one of the highest medal winners in the festival. I therefore urge you not relent but to ensure that Abuja makes the top 10 in the medal table,’ she said.
?She charged the contingent to improve on FCT’s performance at the last two editions by finishing among top 10 at the Eko Games. ‘As you are aware, FCT won 19 medals at the Kada Games 2009 in Kaduna, 41 medals at the Garden City Games in Port Harcourt. It is my ardent belief that Eko 2012 medals haul will surpass those of the 16th and 17th National Sports Festival significantly.’
She pledged to reward gold medalists N500, 000, silver medalists N300, 000 and N200, 000 for any bronze medal won.
