Glo-CAF Awards: CAF Unveils Drogba, Toure, Others

Globacom Limited and the Confederation of African Football (CAF), on Friday unveiled the top five nominees for the 2012 African Footballer of the year Award which Ghana will host for an unprecedented fourth time on December 20.

At a joint Press Conference held in Accra, Mr. Kwesi Nyantakyi, Member of the Executive Committee of CAF on behalf of President Issa Hayatou, named the top five contenders for the 2012 Glo-CAF Player of the Year as Alex Song of FC Barcelona and Cameroun, Andre Dede Ayew of Olympic Marseille and Ghana, Demba Ba of Newcastle FC and Senegal, Didier Drogba of Shanghai Shenhua and Ivory Coast and finally, Yaya Toure of Manchester City and Ivory Coast.

CAF also released the names of top three finalists for the Africa-based ‘The Player of the Year’ Award. They are: Mohamed Aboutreika of Al-Ahly and Egypt, Raymond Kalaba of TP Mazembe and Zambia and Stoppila Sunzu also of TP Mazembe and Zambia.

The list is prepared through a vigorous selection process by the Technical, Football and Media Committees of CAF, taking into account the performance of the players for their national teams and clubs from January to November of each year. The ultimate winner of the award will be decided by votes from the Head Coaches or the Technical Directors of the National Associations affiliated to CAF.

The Glo-CAF Awards gala has become one of the continent’s most prestigious sports events, providing Africa with a reputable forum for recognising and rewarding achievement in the various departments of football.
