At least eight people were killed and 12 were injured in an earthquake on Wednesday in eastern Iran, the?provincial governor's office spokesman told Mehr news agency on Thursday.
The quake with a magnitude of 5.5 hit the town of Zohan in the Khorasan province near the provincial cities of Birjand and Ghaen,
where residents fled their homes in panic.
One little child is said to be still?under the debris and desperate rescue efforts by its parents and Red Crescent teams have so far
been futile.
The Iranian Red Crescent will work throughout the night to rescue residents and accommodate survivors in temporary tents. (dpa/NAN)
