The next teachers training nationwide which is to be conducted by the National Teachers Institute will be met with stiff resistance until the outstanding balance of N11,500 owed them in the last exercise is paid.
This was revealed by the national president of the union, Comrade MichealOlukoya during a media briefing.
He said the union had observed with total dismay the clandestine attitude between the National Teachers Institute and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and clearly stated that “no teachers will take part in the training. You can imagine that those who participated in the last training were paid only N2,500. Are we slaves in our country?”
He disclosed that many lobbied with powers that be, especially state governments, so that the NUT executive members could have a rethink and shift grounds but the union,he said, would stick to its grounds as no member wouldlose focus.
He appealed to the minister and all relevant stakeholders to work towards ensuring that the outstanding balance was paid.
Similarly, the union has urged state governments to include the welfare of teachers, especially the 27.5 per cent salary increment in the 2013 budget as it has long been over due.
