The ECOWAS Commission President, Kadré Ouédraogo, says the commission will sustain its support for stronger democratic culture and good governance in the sub-region.
This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday to commend the conduct of Ghanaians during ?the presidential and parliamentary elections held on Dec. 7 in the country.
He said the commission would encourage?member states to emulate tried and tested good governance values.
The president?noted that the National Electoral Commission extended voting in some areas, due to late arrival of materials and malfunctioning of the Biometric Verification Machines (BVMs) used for the first time in Ghana.
He said that in spite of this, the conduct of the Ghanaian electorate and other stakeholders was exemplary and commendable.
Ouedraogo?urged member states to draw lessons from the BVMs experience for deepening of democracy in the region.
He said the Electoral Commission had ensured that lapses in the BVMs would be rectified.
He also appealed for calm and called on any party which might challenge the result of the election to follow the appropriate procedures to seek redress.
He commended the determination and zeal demonstrated by Ghanaians to exercise their civic duty, urging them to?preserve the country’s culture, tradition and reputation.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the?commission deployed 250 Election Observers to Ghana to monitor the?elections, held in 26,000 polling centres across the country. (NAN)
