The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Birnin Kebbi Zone, has requested for a quick verification of members to ensure the payment of their November salaries.
Alhaji Zaki Sarki, the Zonal Chairman of NUT in the area, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Birnin Kebbi ton Wednesday that the delay in payment of the salaries was caused by the ongoing verification of teachers.
He said the state chapter of the union in collaboration with the three zonal offices of the union, were working tirelessly to ensure that teachers’ got their salaries.
“The union would defend the interest of teachers to avoid anyone being unjustly sacked,” he said.
He said members of the Birnin Kebbi zone of the NUT were employees in Birnin Kebbi, Kalgo, Bunza, Gwandu, Aliero, Maiyama and Koko/Besse, Jega and Suru Local Government Areas.
He said the union would also ensure that the ongoing verification exercise was not aimed at witch-hunting the teachers.
According to him the zone needed 2,000 additional teachers in both primary and the Junior Secondary School to bridge the gap created by the dearth of teachers.
“The sacking of teachers would not augur well for the educational development of the area,” he said. (NAN)
