The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) said on Friday it arrested 30 alien herbal drug hawkers in Dutse, the Jigawa capital.
The Director of the agency in the state, Mr Kenneth Azikwe, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse that the drug hawkers were arrested with support from the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
“In recent times, foreign nationals have been coming to Jigawa state to hawk herbal drugs; my men, in collaboration with the immigration service, have cleared all of them away and those herbal drug dealers from outside Nigeria are no longer there.
“And even the drug dealers that relocated to Dutse because of the clampdown on them in Kano, have been cleared; so Jigawa state is free of drug hawkers.
“You can’t find them anywhere; we have mounted surveillance; they will be arrested anywhere they appear hawking those fake and substandard drugs; we will put them out of business
“Drug hawkers are death merchants; nobody should patronise them; nobody should have any dealing with them because the drugs they sell cannot be guaranteed; so, people should not patronise them; people should not buy drugs from them.”
The director said the agency had established consumer safety clubs in various schools and also set up desk offices across the 27 local council areas of the state to help educate communities more on the agency’s activities.
He said that the measure was also aimed at checking the circulation of fake and substandard drugs, medicines and other foods.
