Court Jails Man For Machete Attack
An Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ court has sentenced one Tunmise Abraham, an auto-mechanic, to two years imprisonment for grievously hurting two persons with a machete.
Magistrate Bayode Owoeye convicted the accused person while delivering judgment in a two-count charge brought against Abraham for assaulting one Oke Ajibola and Tony Ayodele
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the two-count charge carries one year term each as penalty without an option of fine.
``I have considered the facts presented before this court vis-à-vis the plea of guilty by the accused.
`` He is hereby found guilty as charged and convicted and the jail term shall not run concurrently,’’ he said.
Mr Ebenezer Ewuola, the police prosecutor, had earlier told the court that Abraham on Oct. 2 wounded his victims by attempting to cut their necks with a machete.
According to Ewuola, the convict attacked his victims at about 1:30 pm beside Nova School in Ado-Ekiti.
The prosecutor submitted that the accused person admitted to have committed the acts.
``The confessional statement of the accused was admitted as evidence in court.
``The accused person deserves maximum sentence as his intention was to kill the victims,’’ he said.
The prosecutor submitted that the attacks, which left deep cuts on the necks of the two victims, contravened Section 335 of the Criminal Code Cap 77 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1990 as amended.
Abraham, who was not represented by a counsel, had pleaded guilty to the charge and prayed the court to tender justice with mercy. (NAN)
