Speed Violation Still Major Cause Of Accident – Chidoka

The Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Osita Chidoka, has said that speed violation was the major cause of road accidents.

Chidoka made this assertion when he made a stopover at Lokoja while monitoring the traffic.

This was just as he expressed concern over rate of road crashes within the last six days and attributed this to speed violation on the part of the drivers. There have been 94 deaths in 191 crashes so far.

In order to stem this ugly and sad scenario, the Corps has further devised speed calming measures as part of strategies to safe guard the lives of motorists during this period of festivities.

With this development, the Corps Marshal said that the Corps will re-double efforts to cope with expected influx of traffic during the New Year to avert further crashes.

Chidoka said, “It is an attitudinal issue as this year witnessed rehabilitation of major corridors of the highways, people tend to disregard traffic laws bordering on speed limits and accelerate beyond recommended speed thus resulting to the figures we have witnessed in the last six days. We have devised measures to address this unpleasant development”.

He however urged motorists to be mindful of road regulations, and warned that acts of making phone calls while driving and drunk driving; over-speeding, overloading and seat belt violation would be visited with severe punishment.
