Four persons lost their lives in a canoe mishap in Kirikasamma Local Government Area of Jigawa, an eyewitness has said.
?The witness told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the accident occurred on Tuesday when a wooden canoe conveying nine passengers capsized at the Hadejia River.
?The witness, Hadi Musa, told NAN in Kirikasamma on Thursday that the accident occurred when the canoe had a head-on with a bigger canoe moving from the opposite direction.
Musa said that five persons were rescued by local divers, while the bodies of four others were discovered several hours after the accident.
“The rescue effort was difficult due to the rising wave in the water and it took the divers more than 30 hours to recover the dead bodies,” he said.
According to him, the passengers were travelling from Machina Community in Yobe to Gubunsa Village in Jigawa.
“They were going to attend a wedding ceremony in Gubunsa village,” he added. Mr Abdu Jinjiri, the Public Relations Officer of the Jigawa Police Command, confirmed the incident.
