Pay Full Severance Entitlements To PHCN Workers – Union Leader

A labour leader, Mr Bede Opara, has advised the Federal Government to pay the full severance entitlements of the disengaged workers of PHCN.

He said that failure to pay the full severance packages to the disengaged workers could worsen the woes of the sector.

Opara, President General, Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC), gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.

He urged the Federal Government to pay all the entitlements of the disengaged workers to instill confidence in the new private investors.

Opara said that many of the workers were skeptical about the Federal Government’s willingness to comply with the agreements it reached with their union on severance payment.

He said that representatives of the Federal Government and the PHCN union met in December and decided on the modalities for paying their severance entitlements.

?“Up till now, we have only read it in the paper that the severance packages would be paid.

“There is no notice yet from the Ministry of Power as regards these payments,” he said.

NAN recalls that the Ministry of Power had said that it had concluded plans to begin to give disengagement letters to PHCN workers.

The ministry said that N170 billion would be disbursed as severance packages to the workers.

?It would be recalled that the Energy Sector Power Reform Act of 2005 has unbundled the PHCN into 18 successor companies.
