The Chairman of LEADERSHIP Newspapers Group, Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah, has called for the evolution of a new political order to save Nigeria from further leadership failure.
He also urged Nigerians to appreciate the complexities of leadership in the country in order to “evolve a new leadership culture that thrives on trust, openness and accountability.”
Nda-Isaiah spoke at the launch of a book in honour of Alhaji Abubakar Usman Sandaji in Lafia, the Nassarawa State capital yesterday.
The LEADERSHIP chairman was represented at the occasion by the Managing Director of LEADERSHIP Holdings, Mr. Abraham Nda-Isaiah and spoke on a theme titled ‘The Challenges of Nigerian Politics to Good Governance.’
He said ‘‘leadership is complicated, because with it comes the burden of trust, integrity, harmony, accountability, openness, public spiritedness, vision and courage. Beyond this, leadership is concerned with fostering change. It is based on inherent values and is a group process.
“The fact that we have been failed in this regard by successive governments is enough for us to examine the environment and provisions which continue to make failure inevitable. We need to ask ourselves what kind of political system will be adequate and appropriate to accommodate the type of political parties which have been emerging since our political parties?
“What ideology or philosophy should be the basis for any political party in Nigeria? Whatever your views, you will agree with me that political parties have their origins in the struggle for power and their dominant objective is to capture or retain control of governments, nothing more.”
Also speaking at the event, Senator Solomon Ewuga, who chaired the occasion, said; ‘‘We are all here because we appreciate the contributions of Sandaji to the development of our community. He is a man with the people at heart and has represented us well at the federal level.’’
The reviewer of the book and Nasarawa State Commissioner for Finance, Prof. M. A. Mainoma, said; ‘‘Sandaji has schooled in Lafia, Keffi and Zaria, he is a man of learning. He has the zeal for making the lives of people better.’’
Responding, Sandaji said; ‘‘I am honoured to be back home and appreciated by my people. I left to serve my country 35 years ago and I am happy to be back”.?
The book titled The Testimonial, was written by Mr. Donatus Nadi, LEADERSHIP Newspapers correspondent in Nassarawa State.
