The Inspector- General of Police (IGP), Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, has described the allegation that the Police High command killed Olaitan Oderinde, former private secretary of Edo State governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, as unfounded.
Abubakar made the comment yesterday while fielding questions from journalists during his first conference in 2013 with officers from the rank of commissioners of police upwards. He pointed out that although the matter was already before a competent court and so would be subjudice to comment on the matter, saying that the police would reply Oshiomhole who made the allegation on Thursday during the launch of Code of Conduct for officers and men of the Nigeria Police, at the appropriate time.
“If you were at the summit you would have heard my reaction. But let me tell you something. In the first place, the case is in court, so it will be subjudice for me to be discussing the case. But we are going to reply that comment at the appropriate time and soonest because he made allegations that are unfounded; I will reply at the appropriate time,” he said.
The IGP, who disclosed that the meeting with the senior officers was meant to evaluate and reassess police performance in the previous year, with a view to improving on this year, urged officers to ensure that adequate security is provided for Nigerians.
“We are here to appraise our past strategies and performance for the last year, evaluate our achievements, challenges and then set new agenda and course of action for the year before us,” he said.
Abubakar called on members of the Nigerian public to make their complaints and observation of the compliance of the code of conduct by the officers, pointing out that the channels of complaint go from the area command, through the divisional command, the state command, the zonal command and the force headquarters.
He directed the state and zonal commands to organise workshop and seminars to enlighten the officers on the code of conduct.
