No fewer than six people were allegedly killed while several others were allegedly injured during a clash? between some pipeline vandals and men of Security and Civil Defence Corps at? Arepo Village in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The casualties according to sources included both the vandals and NSCDC officials LEADERSHIP SUNDAY? learnt that the vandals had threatened to set the pipeline on fire to prevent arrest from the men of the corps.
Men of the Civil Defence Corps and other villagers were restricted by the vandals who were said to have suffered severe casualty.
The source said ‘’I can’t tell you exactly the number of victims, but I manage to count five lifeless bodies in the? river as the vandals were struggling to escape through the water in their boat”.
Meanwhile another fuel scarcity looms in South West Nigeria as the major pipelines of NNPC supplying fuel from Atlas Cove Jetty, Lagos to South West States caught fire early Saturday morning after been vandalised at Arepo in Ogun state.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC,? officials who reported at the scene were unable to gain access to the area.
The state commandant of NSCDC, Aboluwaye Akinwande according to a source, had contacted the NNPC to stop further supply of fuels to the pipelines.
It could be recalled that few days ago men of the NSCDC engaged in a gun dwell with some vandals in Arepo axis of Obafemi Owode Local Government area of Ogun State.
The Armed Squad of the Command were deployed to the area by commandant Aboluwoye Akinwande? to check-mate the vandalism activities following a tip-off.
According to a release signed by the Corps Public Relation Officer, Kareem Olanrewaju, and made availble to newsmen, he said, “On getting there, the vandals who had laid ambush waiting for NSCDC officials to run into their trap opened fire on men of the Corps with a quick response from the? combat team of the Corps.
The release said, “ the vandals took to their heels bowing to the superior fire power of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps”.
“ Some of them, we understood, escaped with bullets wounds. They escaped through bush and waterways”.
Kareem? appealed to members of public, especially people living around Arepo, Majidun and its environs to promptly inform the Corps if they see anybody with bullet wounds”.
