MultiChoice Plans More Resource Centres For Public Schools

MultiChoice Nigeria, has disclosed plans to roll out more MultiChoice Resource Centre (MRC) in public schools across the country.

The MRC, which is an audio-visual teaching and learning aid for teachers and students in Secondary Schools is a Corporate Social Initiative (CSI) of MultiChoice Nigeria in partnership with MultiChoice Africa and is aimed at empowering teachers and students with skills in information and communication technologies (ICTs).

This year, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Ondo and Benue States are among States that would benefit from the launch of the resource centres, in addition to the 201 schools in 21 states already in existence.

Speaking on the planned expansion, Managing Director MultiChoice Nigeria, Mr. John Ugbe, said beneficiary schools of the resource centre project have access to the special MultiChoice Education Bouquet.

He said that since the inception of the MRC project in Nigeria in 2004, MultiChoice Nigeria has spent over N150 million on training of over 5,000 teachers in the country on the use of the learning aid and assured that? the company would do more to ensure that more students and teachers benefit from the initiative, which? started yielding result when in 2011 Master Chukwuka Ekweani of Zamani College, Kaduna emerged the winner in the essay category of the DStv Eutelsat Star Awards in Nigeria and came fourth at the continental level.

“We have instructional channels such as Discovery, National Geographic, BBC Knowledge, BBC World, History Channel, Animal Planet and Mindset Learn at no cost to the schools” he said, adding that in addition to its decoders, provides each school with a DVD recorder, a TV set, a power generating set, tables and chairs and other instructional materials.

“The Resource Centre project is part of a broad based community development strategy designed to raise the standard of education in public schools on the African continent by leveraging on the assets and expertise of our digital satellite television for development and growth of African communities,” he explained.

The MRC project is designed for beneficiary public schools to have access to MultiChoice Education Bouquet with a view of integrating the programmes into their curriculum in order to enhance the teaching and learning processes in their schools and with over seven channels on the bouquet, teachers and students have attested that the facility has made learning and teaching easy.
