The Rivers State government has expressed worry over the high rate of falsification of record, especially age declaration, by civil servants under the Unified Local Government Service.
This was just as it directed all the 23 local government councils in the state to set up pension units in the councils within two weeks.
Chairman of the State Local Government Service Commission, Chief Azubuike Nmerukini, announced this in Port Harcourt, the state capital while speaking at a meeting with senior council officials.
Nmerukini said; “We have observed with the regret, the high rate of falsification of records by staff, especially age declaration. Some staff, unknown to them, have changed their age to the point that their children are now older than they are.
“Some staff, due to the number of times they have changed their records, they passed their First School Leaving Certificate when they were in their mothers’ wombs.
“All staff who have been hidding their original documents should bring them out or their papers will not be processed for payment of their pension.”
He stated that establishing pension units in the local government councils was sequel to the hardship encountered by retiring civil servants of the unified local government service, and said, “The commission will not accept a situation where retiring staff spend several weeks or months moving back and front awaiting for their payment without success.”
